Hello, all! Another summer staff member here to
give you the low-down on herself.
To start off, here’s a little background on me:
Just a few weeks ago, I completed the Journalism
program at the College of the North Atlantic in St. John’s, which included an
internship at The Newfoundland Herald, both of which allowed me to meet a
diverse assortment of people in and around my community. The core reason I
enrolled in this program was because I have a love for telling stories, and I
wanted to choose an avenue that would allow me to help other people tell
theirs.
Branching off of that, when my time with
Admiralty House wraps up at the end of August, I intend to pursue an English
degree at Memorial University in the hopes of someday becoming a book editor.
Although I’ll be working out of the Admiralty
House this summer, I was actually brought on by the Conservation Corps through
their ECHO Program, which aims to partner with nonprofits, organizations, and
municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador in order to create employment
opportunities for students.
Despite living just around the corner, it’d been
years since I’d walked through the front door of the museum. And man, how it
had changed! (In a good way of course.) As Community Heritage Officer, I’ll be
in charge of engaging with the public to create a booklet that fully
encapsulates just what makes Mount Pearl… well, Mount Pearl!
I’m especially excited about this because I’ve
lived here in the city my whole life (22 years isn’t such a feat, but still) --
it’s the only home I’ve ever known. Yet I find that, even though there is a
rich history and culture here, it doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.
I’ve already learned so many new things about the place I live in the short
time I’ve been at Admiralty House, and I hope to learn even more and share it
with you all!
To end off, here are some fun facts about me: I
know a passable amount of sign language to hold a very simplistic conversation,
I’m a mediocre kickboxer, I’m the youngest of my family with two big brothers.
I also love photography, animation, reading, as well as proper spelling and
grammar (I’m really cool, I know).
Thanks for reading; this certainly won’t be the
last you hear from me!
Emily Lyver
