Faces of the Florizel Exhibit Catalogue

On February 23, 1918 the SS Florizel left St. John’s for what would be its last journey. What was supposed to be a routine trip from St. John’s to Halifax and then to New York ended in tragedy. Blizzard conditions and miscommunication between the bridge and the engine room caused the vessel to crash into the rocks near Cappahayden, Newfoundland. Of the 137 souls on board, only 44 survived. Admiralty House Communications Museum commemorated the 100th anniversary of this disaster by creating an exhibit titled “Faces of the Florizel” which was on display from February 23, 2018 to June 29, 2018.

This souvenir catalogue of the Faces of the Florizel exhibit features memories of family members, photographs of artifacts, and photographs of the individuals connected to the shipwreck, whether they were on the SS Florizel or part of the rescue efforts. Since the creation of the Faces of the Florizel exhibit, Admiralty House received additional stories and pictures of individuals connected to the SS Florizel disaster. We expanded our exhibit catalogue to feature these new stories. This catalogue also includes a forward by Jane Adey, Journalist with CBC.
