It's that time of year again: proper introductions from our summer staff!
In the past year I have started my Masters degree in History at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, and I am continuing that program next year. I study mostly gender history and British imperial history, with a focus on colonial spaces. My Masters project focuses on Mary Watts-Parsons, a woman who lived in Harbour Grace during the mid-nineteenth century and her connections to the empire through her personal correspondence.
When I am not working at school or the museum, I enjoy taking my dog on walks, crafting, and playing Pokemon games.
This summer, I will be focused on working with the museum’s collections and artifacts, and I am looking forward to getting to learn about the more technical side of museum work. I’m also excited to start welcoming and talking with all our new visitors!
I have found myself working in visitor centres and historic sites over the last few years, so I’ve gotten used to teaching the public all about Newfoundland and our unique culture and quirks. One of my favourite things about my field of work is inspiring people to look around and learn about all the amazing things we take for granted in our province.
When I’m not working, I enjoy hiking, knitting, and playing video games. I have always had an interest in media preservation, so of course I like to collect vintage games and technology. I also spend time researching my family tree on Ancestry.
This summer, I hope to learn more about museum programming and the community of Mount Pearl. Stay tuned to see my blog posts, where I’ll share what I’ve learned with you!
Tanner: My name is Tanner and I am one of the new Museum Assistants at the Admiralty House. I have recently graduated from Memorial University with my Honours in English Literature.
My passions are education and storytelling. I delight in collecting obscure facts and spreading them as far as I can in both work settings and in my personal life. Education has always been a passion of mine. From history to science to a loose bag of facts only useful during local trivia nights, I’ve always strived to learn and become more curious about the world.
Historical studies are at their best when it comes alive within people’s stories, and sharing that pleasure with others is a fantastic way to spend the summer.
When not at the museum I can usually be found reading, writing, on stage, or running after my dog!
We'll have one more staff member joining us in July. Stay tuned for the reveal!
