Frosty Friday: Hockey Night in Mount Pearl, the Kentucky Cup

When it comes to Frosty Festival events the Kentucky Cup is a stand out in people's memories.

Every interview we've conducted so far has touched on this iconic Frosty Festival experience. The Kentucky Cup pitted O'Donel High School and Mount Pearl Senior High against each other on the ice.

"I remember the hockey games, I can't remember was it the Kentucky Cup was always during the Frosty Festival? Well it was a very, it was a competitive game of hockey, but you know it was good hockey, like people in the stands didn't get out of control or anything like that. I mean it was really good hockey, back in those days. And of course you always went to cheer on your team and things like that." - Stephanie Collins

"I played with the O'Donel girls hockey team for 5 seasons from 2004 until 2009. Nearly every year the MPSH team won, except for one year. My favourite memory is the time we finally won the Kentucky cup (in 2007). Of 5 years I participated on the O'Donel girls hockey team, the Kentucky cup was always the highlight of every year (win or lose). Girls hockey doesn't always draw a big crowd, so the atmosphere during the Kentucky cup really elevated the game." - Amanda Ditmann

"The Kentucky Cup with the schools, that was a hoot, O’Donel High and Mount Pearl Senior High, and the Mount Pearl Glacier, used to be blocked, not only that, the old arena was also, was standing room only when we had those hockey games. That was a favourite of mine too." - Agnes Murphy
